Utuado, nestled in the heart of Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central, is a municipality rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Its name derives from the Taíno word “Otoao,” meaning “between mountains,” reflecting its mountainous terrain .

Founded on October 12, 1739, by Irishman Sebastián de Morfi on behalf of 60 families from Arecibo, Utuado holds the distinction of being the first town established in Puerto Rico’s interior mountainous region and the 11th oldest municipality on the island . Prior to Spanish colonization, the area was inhabited by the Taíno people, with the region known as Otoao under the leadership of cacique Guarionex .

Utuado is renowned for the Caguana Ceremonial Ball Courts Site, one of the most significant pre-Columbian archaeological sites in the Caribbean. This site features ancient stone structures and petroglyphs, offering insights into Taíno culture and spirituality .

The municipality boasts diverse natural landscapes, including rivers, caves, and forests. The Tanamá River, flowing through Utuado, is popular for activities like tubing and kayaking. Nearby, the Río Abajo State Forest offers hiking trails and opportunities for birdwatching, showcasing the region’s rich biodiversity .
